Farming in the Amuri Basin, with New Zealand’s highest producing dairy farms on our doorstep, we saw the potential of nitrogen produced by cows. The problem is there’s so much nitrogen in each small nitrate patch that grass can’t use it all.

We thought, if we could harness the nutrient in nitrate patches to cover the whole paddock, we could grow more grass instead of it leaching through the soil, into freshwater. 

We wouldn’t need to import all of this expensive synthetic urea. This would save farmers a lot of money and prevent the environmental problems caused by small nitrate patches. Our life’s work is focused on solving the global nitrate problem.

Inspired by New Zealand’s rich tradition of engineering innovation, Thomas recognized the untapped potential where technology meets agriculture. As a Mechatronics Engineer from the University of Canterbury, he has contributed to pioneering electronic consumer vehicles with local Kiwi companies. Now, he is applying his expertise to a mission with far greater impact.
